Which team did I choose?
I chose the Polyglots Team, and my project is translating WooCommerce into Spanish (Costa Rica), using translate.wordpress.org.
Why did I choose this team?
To be honest, my first reason is personal: I want to improve my English. Translating is a great way to do that, because I have to read real English, understand what it means, and then explain it clearly in Spanish. I can’t just translate word by word, so I have to think about the context.
My second reason is that I want to give something back to the WordPress community. WordPress is free software that millions of people use, and many of them don’t speak English. A good translation helps those people use WordPress and WooCommerce in their own language. I like that I can learn and help at the same time.
What will my project be?
I will suggest translations for WooCommerce strings (the messages, buttons and labels that users see in a store) in the Spanish (Costa Rica) locale. I will start with the Stable version and focus on untranslated strings. My goal is to submit 100 translations and get as many of them approved as possible.
How does it connect with my skills and interests?
I’m a Computer Systems Engineering student at Universidad Fidélitas, so I’m already familiar with technical words and I understand how an online store works. I’m also interested in web development, so seeing how a big project like WooCommerce is built, even from the translation side, is very interesting to me.
What do I hope to achieve?
By the end of the program, I hope to have a good number of approved translations, a public contribution history on my WordPress.org profile, and more confidence reading and writing in English. I also want to learn from the feedback I get, even if some of my suggestions are rejected. I’m sure I will make mistakes, and I plan to write about them honestly here.
